Itinerary:
Day One:
Travel north along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal drives to Cooya Beach where it’s time to get native, join the Kubirri Warra brothers on one of their beach, mudflat and mangrove walks!
Linc and Brandon Walker follow the traditions of their ancestors who, for thousands of years, educated visitors about their traditional country in order to ensure the survival of their Kuku Yalanji culture. Today the brothers teach their guests how to throw a spear, hunt whilst stalking and observing wildlife and country, and how to track coastal resources. And they share some of their extensive knowledge of this special area and how they care for their country.
Continue the journey north to the World Heritage Listed Daintree National Park. Cross the Daintree River by cable ferry. The Daintree River is home to the Julaymba Clan of the Kuku Yulanji Bama people. Enjoy lunch where the Reef meets the Rainforest before continuing on the 4WD only Bloomfield Track.
Join the Walker Family, a close-knit group of wonderfully warm and friendly people, are members of the Kuku Yalanji tribe who have lived in this area for tens of thousand of years. Their traditional lands are part of the beautiful World Heritage rainforest area, and encompass the Bloomfield Falls, after which Wujal Wujal is named.
The Walkers will take you on a bush walk with a difference, giving you the opportunity to listen and talk to the traditional custodians of the area, and receive a fascinating insight into the history and the many different uses of plant species for food, medicine and ceremonial purposes. This is an opportunity to see the rainforest through their eyes, and to learn about the cultural significance of this area.
The Walkers share some of their knowledge about this special place which is of great cultural significance to the Yalanji people.
On the way to your accommodation, stop at the famous Lion’s Den Hotel (est. 1875) one of North Queensland’s oldest established running bush pubs. Arrive at Mungumby Lodge, for your overnight stay. Enjoy dinner as you listen to the sounds of the Australian bush and reflect on your day of discovery.
(Lunch & Dinner Included)
Day Two:
Enjoy a tropical breakfast before your early morning departure for the township of Cooktown and magical experience with Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon.
Willie takes his guests to his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills above Hope Vale. Here he shares the stories behind the art – stories which can only be told by Elders of the Nugal clan - and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people.
With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie not only gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society, but will have you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all today.
The Rainbow Serpent Tour takes you through a dramatic landscape to six rock art sites, including an ancestral Birth Cave and the Reconciliation Cave. Estimated 30-minute bush walk on generally easy terrain.
Enjoy free time to explore Cooktown, with its laid-back atmosphere and friendly people it is a town rich in history…rich in nature….rich in spirit. This afternoon return to Cairns via the inland road, Mulligan Highway. Travel will be through a diverse landscape which is the Outback of Far North Queensland.
