The 9 Day Cape York Safari takes you on an adventure to the tip of Cape York.
Journey through remote areas including the Telegraph Track, Twin Falls, Weipa, Lakefield National Park, Laura, Cooktown and Cape Tribulation. This 4WD Rainforest and Outback Expedition will be a journey of a lifetime.
Itinerary: Drive/Fly Combination*
(This tour can also be taken in reverse Fly/Drive)
Meals as indicated - Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Dinner (D)
Day One - Cairns to Cooktown (L/D)
Drive the scenic coastline past Port Douglas and Mossman and enter the World Heritage areas of the Greater Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation. Tackle the steep Bloomfield Track (weather permitting), cross the Bloomfield River and enter the mountainous rainforests of Cedar Bay National Park. A pause at Lions Den Hotel and the eerie Black Mountain National Park before arriving in Cooktown to the first campground.(Toilets & Showers)
Day Two - Cooktown to Lakefield National Park (B/L/D)
Dsicover a little more of Cooktown before venturing beside the escarpments of Battlecamp Road and enter the vast Lakefield National Park. A pause at Old Laura vividly portrays the hardship our pioneers endured. We anticipate seeing crocodiles in their natural environment and the Park abounds in a huge variety of birdlife. Billabongs and waterholes are plentiful as is the associated wildlife. Camp at the Normandy River. (Toilets and Showers)
Day Three - Lakefield National Park - Coen (B/L/D)
Continue along the entire length of this 1.6 million acre National Park still seeking endemic wildlife to arrive at Musgrave Telegraph Station in time for morning tea. Cross the Bamboo range, watershed of the Great Dividing Range before arriving at the campsite in Coen. (Toilets & Showers
Day Four - Coen to Weipa (B/D)
The quaint and colourful village of Coen contrasts starkly with the relatively modern Bauxite mining township of Weipa with air-conditioned shops and sealed roads. Time this afternoon to catch up on laundry, telephone family or go fishing. Note - to avoid disappointment, fishing trips must be booked well before departure date. (Toilets & Showers)
Day Five - Weipa to Bramwell Cattle Station (B/L/D)
An optional Bauxite Mine, town and lifestyle tour is recommended this morning before travelling through Batavia Downs to the Wenlock River and briefly visit Moreton Telegraph Station before arriving at Bramwell Cattle Station, famed for its true bush hospitality. Your wonderful hostess is Wendy, owner of 520 square mile property. (Bush Toilet & Swim)
Day Six - Bramwell - Twin Falls (B/L/D)
The original Overland Telegraph Track is traversed where the merits of the 4 x 4 vehicles are put to the test. Cross Cockatoo and Scrubby Creeks to arrive at Twin Falls early afternoon. This is the jewel of the peninsula where you can swim, hike and relax at this really beautiful spot, the Elliot River. (Pit Toilet & Swim)
Day Seven - Twin Falls - Cape York (B/L/D)
Depart mid-morning and continue over rough roads and cross the crocodile infested Jardine River by cable ferry. Travel further north through the Aboriginal village of Injinoo and the Torres Strait Islander town of Bamaga before arriving at Base Camp overlooking the azure, peaceful waters of Torres Strait. (Toilets & Showers)
Day Eight - Base Camp (Opt) Thursday Island (B/D)
An optional tour package to Thursday Island and Horn Islands is highly recommended with Peddells Ferry Service, it has an excellent reputation and the trip is both enjoyable and rewarding. Alternatively, blue water or estuarine fishing is another option. Note - To avoid disappointment, fishing trips must be booked well before tour departure date. (Toilets and Showers)
Day Nine - Cape York to Cairns (B/L)
Celebrations this morning as you walk the final kilometre to stand on the Australian mainland's most northerly point. A place of sheer magnificence surround by islands near and far and a brilliant turquoise sea. Visit other places of interest like the Croc Tent for souvenirs, before the scenic flight to Cairns arriving about 6.00pm and then say farewell as you arrive at your accommodation.
* Reverse Itinerary:
The Fly/Drive itinerary is almost identical to that above, i.e. Day One transposes to Day Nine. All highlights and points of interest remain unaltered. You will be driven to your 7:00am flight from Cairns to Bamaga Airport on Day One.
